Below is preliminary information to help you prepare to consider your options, complete the application, and participate in continuing student housing selection.
- Talk with friends and classmates about their housing plans and consider who you may want to live with. During the application process each student will establish roommate groups and indicate their preferred roommate(s)/suitemate(s).
- Become familiar with the various room options across campus.
- Attend a virtual information session to learn more about the application and selection process.
- Once the application becomes available in the spring, complete the application and be sure to include any preferred roommates/suitemates.
- After the housing application deadline, Housing will reach out directly to all students who have completed their applications by the deadline with specific selection instructions.
Information Sessions
Virtual and in-person information sessions will be conducted to showcase the entire process. The presentation below covers essential information and addresses frequently asked questions. Please take the time to review the recording, and if you have any specific additional questions, feel free to submit a case.
Application Considerations
Failure to complete by the deadline will result in an inability to participate in the room selection process. NO exceptions. The date of application received (prior to the deadline) does not impact appointment time slot(s) issued to participate in the room selection process.
Should you complete your application and receive an assignment and then decide to cancel, you will be charged a penalty of $500. If you do not receive an assignment, no penalty will be assessed.
Unfortunately, there is no guarantee of on-campus housing for continuing students.
Students are advised to not utilize on-campus housing as a backup plan. Doing so may result in a late cancellation in which the student could be fully responsible for room charges.
The room preferences page is meant to collect students' interest in the various room options they are eligible to be considered for based on their classification and credit hours accrued to date. This information is used by the assignment staff in the event you do NOT select a space yourself and you wish to be considered for a space once the process concludes.
If you do not have preferred roommate(s)/suitemate(s) you can still go through the process. Please note you may be selecting spaces where other students may have already selected to reside.
A student cannot be both a group leader and member of a group at the same time. Once a student establishes a group, they will need to invite members to join. These members must accept the invitation for it to appear valid. If a student created a group but wanted to create a different group with others, they can remove the old group and membership therein to start a new group or become a member of someone else's group that wishes to invite them to join. This is available through the application as indicated above.
We encourage students who do not have people in mind they want to live with to use the questionnaire as part of the application to find other compatible student(s). They have the ability to connect with and request joining a roommate group. Since we prioritize larger roommate groups going first in the selection process, we encourage students find others to live with.
Students will be able to request one another on the Search for Roommates section of the application. To do so, they will need to know the Screenname of the individual(s) they are requesting. This must be a mutual request for it to be a recognized group.
Locations
Lakeside Village and Eaton will continue to house sophomores. Current sophomores who reside in Lakeside Village are only permitted to live in University Village for their junior and senior years.
Students who are juniors or seniors are only eligible to live in University Village. Lakeside Village and Eaton Residential College will not be an option for students with 60+ credits or more than 4 semesters of college. Juniors or seniors will not be able to be roommates with a sophomore living in Lakeside Village or Eaton due to housing capacity.
Current freshman (despite having 60+ credit hours) will be able to participate in Lakeside Village and Eaton processes. If the student wishes to live in University Village, they must participate in the process for Lakeside Village or Eaton and then submit a room change request once the selection process is completed. We will work to accommodate as many requests as possible prior to fall move-in.

Eligibility for On-Campus Housing
Students who are living off-campus at the time of the application process will not be eligible to participate in the housing selection process.
Students who were unable to secure on-campus housing last academic year 2023-2024, we encourage students to submit a case so we can review eligibility to participate in the process.
Students on UM Study Abroad or UMLA Spring 2024 are eligible to participate in housing selection for 2024-2025. Housing selection information will be sent directly to their UM email including important dates and deadlines.
- Students who lived on campus in Fall 2023 but cancelled to participate in Study Abroad through sanctioned UM program they would be eligible to participate in the application and selection process.
Students who were Spring 2024 first year student admits and unable to secure on-campus housing should submit a case so we can review eligibility to participate in the process.
Resident Assistants and First Year Fellows, or those interested in applying for these roles, will still need to complete a housing application, and participate in continuing student housing selection. Successful candidates who are hired for these roles do not need to participate in continuing student housing selection. Candidates who plan living on-campus and are hired as an alternate must participate in continuing student housing selection.
Tips for Success
- To broaden your chances of receiving housing, you will want to be sure you identify up to three other people to live with. Priority will be given to groups of 3 and 4 since we have a majority of this room/suite/apartment type in our inventory.
- Make sure you have multiple plans in place with your roommate group members. Take advantage of looking at room layouts ahead of time, using the room previewer function on the Housing Portal, and viewing tutorials (coming soon).
- Talk ahead of time to your roommate group members (where applicable) to find out who has the earliest appointment time. That is the individual who should lead the process for all other members.
- It is okay to secure a space in something you may not initially want. There will be a process to request room changes after the housing selection process concludes.
- Utilize Room Preview to view available rooms prior to and during the selection period .

Should you not successfully complete your application in time or participate in the Continuing Student Housing Selection process, we have off-campus options for you to consider. We encourage you to visit our Off-Campus Housing website for more information.
Additionally, we will host an off-campus housing fair. Specific details will be shared in the spring semester.
Selection
To create an equitable process for all students who have interest in on campus housing, individual appointment times for housing selection will be chosen at random by our database system for all applicants.
- Appointment times are prioritized based on group size and issued at random. Groups of 3 and 4 would go first and only be able to see units that accommodate their group size. We want students to fill full spaces with their larger roommate group sizes to go first.
- Students in groups of 3 and 4 are not eligible to see 2-bedroom or 1-bedroom units since those units cannot accommodate their group size. The next group in the process will be groups of 2, then groups of 1 to view unit types for 1 individual.
- When going through the process as 1, students would be able to see a 1:1 unit or a space within a 4-bedroom unit that a group of 3 selected but was willing to accept a random roommate.
- It is not possible a group size of 2 and a group size of 4 would have appointment times at the same time based on this setup.
- Once a selection has been made and a reservation confirmed, students are unable to return to the selection process and make changes. Students will have 2 minutes to make a selection.
- This also applies to UV room renew. If students in UV renew, they will not be eligible for room selection.
